We released the single God Bless the Children / Somebody Sing My Song in 1987. In 1988, God Bless the Children was sung by all the Miss World contestants whilst they were appearing at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
When I wrote this song, I started with the title which was inspired a bit by the Billie Holiday song ‘God bless the child’
We needed a children’s choir to create the right atmosphere so we found a nearby primary school in Scarborough (Gladstone Road School) and after recording their part in the assembly hall we finally mixed it all in the studio.
A few weeks later we hired coaches to take the kids and their parents to the Riverside Studio in London to shoot the video. It was a long day for the kids but I know they enjoyed the experience... as we all did.
